Replacing Keyboard and Power Jack on Toshiba Satellite L305

Replacing Keyboard and Power Jack on Toshiba Satellite L305

Tea got spilled on the keyboard which caused a few keys to start failing. I used this software to test the keyboard.

The power jacks on a few Toshiba models are notorious for breaking and becoming loose and staying recessed in the body of the laptop.

 Remove the battery.

Remove the three small screws in the battery compartment.

 Remove the RAM cover.

Take out the screw holding in the optical drive.

Push on the tab to take tot drive out.

Unscrew the hard drive cover.

Pull the hard drive ribbon to slide to hard drive out.

Remove the 13 screws that are circled in red.

Lightly pry the top strip of the keyboard off with a screwdriver.

Remove the two screws holding the keyboard in.

Push the brown tabs to release the ribbon cable.

Unscrew the 5 screws circled in red.

Use a guitar pick or other thin object to separate the body from the top lid.

Before pulling the lid off make sure to disconnect the white ribbon cable and male-female connector.

Type N connector bought at Radio Shack for $3.

Use a razor to smooth the outside of the hole.

Increase the hole size to 7/16".

Cut the longer lead so they are equal lengths.

Cut away the "T" section on the top lid.

Cut off the old connector.

Strip all four wires and twist the two blacks together and the two reds together.

Put a short length of heat shrink tubing on each wire.

Tighten the new connector in place.

Solder the red wire to the center lead and the black wire to the outside lead.

Shrink the wrap with a heat gun or other heat source.

Reconnect the male-female connector.

Snap the top lid back in place and put the five screws back in.

New keyboard! $15 from Amazon.

Insert the ribbon cable.

Slide the bottom tabs of the keyboard in first.

Reinsert the two screws that hold the keyboard on.

Snap the keyboard strip back in place.

Reinsert the three small screws in the keyboard compartment.

Slide the optical drive back in and tighten the screw.

Reinsert the 13 screws on the bottom of the laptop. Replace the RAM cover and insert the battery.

The new jack is much more rigid.

It works!
